As part of its ongoing Silver Jubilee Celebrations, Don Bosco Higher Secondary School Panaji, on 28thSeptember 2019 organized a one-day teachers’ seminar on ‘Understanding the Mental Health Needs of Students’. Altogether 105 teachers from all over Goa participated. The dignitaries present on the occasion were Chief Guest Dr. Ashish Shrivastava, a senior psychiatrist of the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour, Guest of Honour Mr.Raul Prazeres, Principal Fr. Savio Gomes, and Vice President of the P.T.A Mrs.Sintia Costa Fernandes.

To welcome the guests, students melodiously sang the Silver Jubilee theme song: ‘Thank You, Lord’ composed by Samuel Fernandes from XII Arts .A thought provoking play titled ‘You Matter’ was then performed by the students, depicting the social stigma associated with mental health issues, and sending out an impassioned plea to change societal attitudes towards mental health. The play was directed by teachers Selza Lopes and Trisha Almeida.

Addressing the teachers the Chief Guest Dr. Ashish Shrivastava congratulated the management and staff for understanding the importance of Mental Health and for attempting to seek and unravel coping strategies though the seminar for the benefit of the student community in Goa.

Mrs.Prachi Khandeparkar and Mrs. Percy Cardozo both trained psychologists at Sangath Goa were the resource persons for the seminar, and spokeon the topic “Common Mental Health issues faced by children and the Management strategies involved”. The teachers were later grouped in to two sections for very thought provoking and interactive sessions.

Certificates were awarded to all the participants and the Principals of their respective Institutes were bestowed with a jubilee medal as a souvenir. The programme was effectively coordinated by teachers Shanti D’Souza, Rajesh Kalangutkar and Jennifer Godinho.
